Dental Implants: Stages, Timeline & Recovery
July 24, 2026 · 3 min read
The word "implantation" often sounds scarier than the procedure itself. In practice, it's a sequential, well-predictable process broken into clear stages — each with a clear purpose and timeline.
1. Diagnostics & Planning
A CT scan shows the volume and quality of bone tissue, along with the position of nerves and sinuses. Based on this, we plan the implant's exact position and size before any surgery happens. This stage takes a single visit.
2. Implant Placement
A titanium or zirconium root is placed into the bone under local anesthesia. The surgery itself takes 30–60 minutes depending on complexity. If needed, bone grafting is performed at the same time when there isn't enough bone volume.
3. The Healing Period
The implant needs time for the bone to fuse with its surface (osseointegration) — usually 2–4 months in the lower jaw and 4–6 months in the upper. During this time, you can wear a temporary restoration so you're never without a tooth.
4. Placing the Abutment & Crown
Once the implant has fully integrated, a connector (abutment) is attached to it, topped with a permanent crown custom-made to match the color and shape of neighboring teeth.
How Long the Whole Journey Takes
From consultation to the final crown, it typically takes 3–7 months, depending on bone condition and the need for additional procedures. If there's enough bone volume, immediate loading is also possible — a temporary crown right after surgery.
