Professional Hygiene: Pain-Free Air Flow & Piezon

July 28, 2026 · 3 min read

Many people avoid professional hygiene visits, remembering the discomfort of older equipment. Modern methods — Air Flow and Piezon — work differently, and most patients are surprised how comfortable it is after their first session.

How Air Flow Works

The device delivers a mixture of air, water, and fine powder under controlled pressure. It removes soft plaque and staining (from coffee, tea, smoking) from tooth surfaces and hard-to-reach spots between them — with no metal instrument ever touching the enamel.

How Piezon Works

This is an ultrasonic system for removing hardened tartar above and below the gumline. The tip vibrates at high frequency, gently breaking up the tartar, while water cooling immediately flushes the particles away. Unlike hand instruments, pressure on the tooth is minimal.

Does It Hurt

With healthy gums — no, at most a light vibration or coolness from the water. If there's gum inflammation, you might feel slight sensitivity in the first few minutes, which fades as the procedure continues. We always adjust the power setting individually.

How Often to Repeat It

The standard recommendation is once every 6 months. If you're prone to fast tartar buildup, smoke, or have braces or implants — once every 3–4 months. Regular hygiene visits are the cheapest way to prevent much more expensive treatment down the line.
